Following an extremely successful fourth edition of Singapore Model Cabinet (SMC) in 2018, we are proud to bring you the fifth edition in 2019.
SMC is a simulation of the Singapore Cabinet, the executive branch of the government and the highest national decision-making body present in our nation. Similar to Model United Nations conferences, SMC aims to help representatives understand the difficulties of policy-making and learn how to make compromises and negotiate with other parties in order to achieve a mutually beneficial outcome. We hope that participants will gain insights into pertinent local issues and explore innovative ways to address these problems.
The theme for this year's conference is "Singapore: An Evolutionary Nation". This is in view of how Singapore now seems to be at a crossroads, with a new generation of leaders set to emerge. Greater uncertainties on the global stage require us to manage the stresses and strains that come with being a global city. In this conference, four out of six cabinets will be covering pertinent domestic issues in Singapore today, including heritage, education, income inequality and ageing population, while the other two cabinets will be discussing Singapore’s future political climate and foreign policies. We hope our conference will prompt participants to ponder over the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Singapore and how we can stay competitive and vibrant with the collaborative efforts of the government and citizens.
SMC aims to emphasise learning and values everyone’s opinions. It serves as a learning platform for new participants to understand the procedures of such conferences and explore their interest in this area. Thus, it is our most earnest hope that every single participant learns to speak up and share his or her opinions.
To stimulate young people's interest in issues pertaining to Singapore, we would like to invite secondary and pre-university students in Singapore to take part in this conference. Participants will take on the roles of ministers in different ministries or representatives of statutory boards and discuss and craft policies in response to given scenarios in the various cabinets. There will also be opportunities for the participants to interact with the actual policy-makers of the nation who will give them greater insights into how policies are formulated. We sincerely hope that SMC 2019 will be an enriching experience for all.
